What is Proposition 47?

Proposition 47 "The Kindergarten-University Public Education Facilities Bond Act of 2002" resulted from Assembly Bill 16 written by Speaker Emeritus Robert M. Hertzberg. The Assembly Bill was easily approved in the State Assembly and then by a 2/3rd vote in the State Senate on April 4, 2002. On April 26 AB 16 was signed by Governor Gray Davis. This $25.3 billion dollar bond will benefit schools in many areas, such as the construction of new schools, modernization of existing school, and reduction of overcrowding. This state bond will be split between two elections, the first half, $13 billion, was on the Nov. 2002 ballot and approved and the second half, $12.3 billion, will be on the March 2004 ballot.

How will Proposition 47 help TUSD?

The Tustin Unified School District (TUSD) will have enough funds to complete Beckman High School and construct Hicks Canyon Elementary. The district will also receive funds to modernize existing schools and may receive additional funds to relieve overcrowding through out the district.

Because the TUSD lost funds from Proposition 1A in 2001, they have already received preapproval from the State Allocation Board and are guaranteed funds for new school construction and school modernization.
